Our History

Early 1950’s
In the early ’50s, Mr. Joseph Ozad leaves his full time job at Demers Electric with the promise of managing a new Westinghouse Electric branch in the community of Windsor. The company then decides not to open a location leaving Joseph without a job. With his prior experience in the electrical business, Mr. Ozad decides to establish his own business in Windsor. Having some difficulty attaining product lines, Mr. Ozad is forced to travel daily to Detroit to pick up material from vendors to fill the back orders of customers. During his travels, he meets Sam Newman, the owner of Puritan Electric. When Mr. Ozad learns of Newman’s desire to establish a business in Canada, the pair become partners. Established in the electrical industry, Mr. Newman brings to the business many key industry suppliers and it is through these contacts that Electrozad becomes the first independent electrical distributor in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

1955
In April 1955, Joe Ozad incorporates the company and ‘Electrozad’ is born.

1956
A year later, the business aligns with well-known automation company Rockwell’s Allen-Bradley product line to become the first distributor of the product line east of the Manitoba border. Business growth prompts the need for Electrozad to hire its first sales person, Bryan Smith, who eventually becomes Electrozad’s first Chair of the Board.

1961
The Windsor business decides it is time to spread its corporate wings and expand into Sarnia, a market rich in petrol chemical products. So in 1961, Electrozad Supply Co. (Sarnia) Limited is established to provide service to customers of the ‘Chemical Valley.’

1971
Electrozad takes another business leap into the London market with the 1971 opening of Electrozad Supply Co. (London) Limited. This location would service the Automotive, Institutional and Food and Beverage Industries.

1972
In 1972, Electrozad joins Copel, a Canadian Group of Independent Electrical Wholesalers that represents a selected group of manufacturers and products.

1977
In 1977, Bryan Smith purchases the company from Mr. Ozad and Mr. Newman and as president, plays a significant role in the growth and expansion of Electrozad into numerous product lines and other markets.

1978
The Electrozad founder, Joseph Ozad dies in 1978.

1982
The board of directors announces the appointment of Bryan Smith as Chairman of the Board, and William C. Smith as President.

1986
In 1986, the Windsor location moves its operation into a more modern facility that provided state-of-the-art training facilities in which Electrozad could train its employees and customers about new product information. The first branch of the company opens in Chatham the same year as Windsor’s expansion to service the mixed industrial community of Chatham-Kent. Also that year, the Sarnia location celebrates its 25th anniversary.

1987

In 1987, Electrozad Windsor is honoured by the City of Windsor with a Civic Beautification Award.

1991
A second location is opened in London in 1991 to create a convenient location in the city’s vibrant and diverse downtown core. The addition involves the acquisition of Ellis & Howard, another independent electrical distributor. Meanwhile, Sarnia celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Electrozad Windsor receives several honours including the title of “Company of the Year” by the Windsor and District Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards and the Chrysler “Q” Award for Quality Excellence Through Commitment.

1992
In September 1992, Electrozad’s Chairman of The Board, Bryan Smith, passed away.

1993
In 1993, as a member of Copel, Electrozad joins Affiliated Distributors and becomes part of the largest Electrical Marketing Group in North America.

Also in ’93, the Sarnia location receives the Business Achievement Award from the Sarnia Chamber of Commerce.

1996
In 1996, a centralized computer system is installed connecting all of the locations to achieve a seamless flow of business transactions.

The Electrozad Windsor location is honoured by one of its clients, Chrysler Canada, with the Chrysler Gold Pentastar Award in recognition of ‘Superior Performance as a Supplier.’

1999
In 1999, the ISO 9002 Quality Management System Certificate of Registration by KPMG is achieved at all locations.

Information regarding the Canadian Cancer Society and St. Joseph’s Hospice

The Canadian Cancer Society is a national, community-based organization of volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer.

The Society raises much-needed funds for cancer research, leading to breakthroughs in cancer prevention and treatment. As Lynda Short, a breast cancer survivor and volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society, says “I’m walking proof that research works.   I, for one, have been treated with the latest of the most up-to-date of chemotherapies and currently I am participating in a clinical trial; without funding for research we would not come as far as we have in beating this disease”. I can give much credit for my survival to Canadian Cancer Society funded research”.

In addition to research, the Society provides support through free transportation to patients, driving over 220,000 kilometres last year for patients in Sarnia Lambton. The Society also provides one to one support by matching patients and families with cancer survivors as well as through a variety of support groups (breast, prostate and blood cancers) right here in Sarnia Lambton. Our volunteers also provide much needed support at the oncology clinic at Bluewater Health. Additional support is available from our cancer information specialists who answer hundreds of questions on a daily basis from patients, families, and the public and health care professionals about how to reduce risk; about early detection and treatment.  The Society has also funded more than $4.3 Million since 2003 into research related to environmental and occupational causes of cancer; a matter of key importance to residents of Lambton County

St. Joseph’s Hospice is a volunteer driven; community based non denominational organization supporting individuals, their families and friends who have been diagnosed with a terminal illness, while providing a place of comfort and care during this critical time. Group grief and bereavement programs are offered weekly at no cost to those attending. We also offer a Children’s “Caring Heart’s Program” to children who are facing a terminal illness themselves or have lost someone significant to them. St. Joseph’s Hospice is currently building a 10 bed residence for individuals who are in the end stage of life.  The residence will provide a home like atmosphere where individuals will be surrounded by family, friends and highly trained care providers. Individuals are very much encouraged to bring in their own mementos, photos and other items to personalize their room. Each bedroom will accommodate family members who wish to stay overnight. The residence will also include family/reflection room, kitchen and dining area, gardens and a resident spa. “This is a place for people who want to be at home but can’t in the final phase of life. We will make sure it feels like a home away from home as much as possible.” stated Dr. Glen Maddison.
